[Tutorial] Build and run your own Bitcoin node on Ubuntu 19.10
I am finally doing my part and running my own bitcoin node in a small home server. Most guides I found online were either incomplete, outdated, or explained only how to run bitcoin-qt (graphical interface). So I built a minimalistic guide with the starting point of Ubuntu 19.10 to run the latest Bitcoin core release (v0.19.0.1) as of today. If you have an old laptop (raspberry pi, NUC, etc even better) a reliable internet connection, and ~ 500Gb of HDD (USB external drive are just fine), you should consider running a node. It's fun, you will deepen your computer knowledge, and you will be supporting the network. Need help! I feel like I am missing something stupid small here. I am trying to run a Ubuntu based Bitcoin Full node. I am trying to run this on on a VM Box in VMWare ESXi 6.5. I have tried Ubuntu Desktop and Server 12.04, 14.04, 16.5, and 18.04. The VMWare box has been giving 6gb of ram, 1TB of storage, and 4 CPU Cores. All of them seem to have the same problem. They freeze my entire box. Usually, the freeze occurs while syncing headers but could happen even while trying to connect to neighbors. I uses these scripts to install Bitcoin Core: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bitcoin-qt Has anything heard of this before? I feel like I am late to the party but I cannot find a way around this.
How to add a lightning node to Bitcoin Core on Ubuntu 18.04??
I installed and synced bitcoin core 0.17.0 on Ubuntu 18.04. I would like to set up a lightning node as well. Is there a recent guide available to walk me through it? I looked around but most guides are older or for other configurations. Can I use ZAP with core? Or should I go with LND? It sounds like I need to use TOR with LND. Is that correct? What are the best resources for using lightning with Bitcoin Core on linux?
We want to run a bitcoin full node. The computer has requisite bandwidth connection and available memory. The operating system is Linux Ubuntu which I do not know. So I go to Bitcoin.org and see there is a Linux Ubuntu option under "Download". Before I click this....is there anything I should know? I've watched videos and read instructions but they don't look like the screen is had.
I am now running Bitcoin Unlimited - How to change over your Ubuntu node in 5 minutes
If you, like me, are not running Bitcoin Unlimited at least in part because you think it might be difficult to do so, let me assure you it is very easy. I was surprised to learn BU has an Ubuntu repository. The commands below worked for me to remove my previous Bitcoin client and replace it with BU. The blockchain and database is untouched so you will NOT need to redownload the blockchain. I was up and running again in minutes.
Your mileage may vary depending on your specific setup. Hope this helps someone! EDIT 1/17/18: The above instructions will configure the Bitcoin Core version of Bitcoin Unlimited. If you want Bitcoin Cash, you need to use the repository ppa:bitcoin-unlimited/bucash INSTEAD of ppa:bitcoin-unlimited/bu-ppa.
